This week in 1963: Nürburgring's double safety fence prevents fatalities after massive crash

1963 Nurburgring Formula 1 crash report

Race cars are dangerous and safety is a priority for drivers, teams and courses. Over the past century automobile safety has been slowly evolving (or rapidly evolving, if Ralph Nader has had anything to say about it). Needless to say, it is unusual for a safety feature that performed its function to make news.
But back in 1963, it did.
During a Formula One race at Nürburgring in 1963, Willy Mairesse's Ferrari steered off course and begun to flip heading towards a large group of spectators. Luckily for the spectators watching the race, a double fence halted the out-of-control race car. Mairesse wasn't as lucky. He suffered broken arms and legs -- right after making a return to racing after being burned at Le Mans earlier in the year.
